Top 6 Spots for a Wholesome Low-key Night Out in Phuket
It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Phuket has everything and then some to offer when it comes to nightlife. Locals and travellers alike enjoy the sights and sounds this little island in the south of Thailand has to offer. But where do you go when the spunky and zany of the red light district – we’re looking at you, Patong – have worn you out? Check out a softer side of Phuket in these 5 low-key though quality time-guaranteed lounging spots.
1. Mai Morn Restaurant & Karaoke
Phuket is renown for its beaches and nightlife shenanigans, so much so that visitors often overlook the island’s flavourful dishes. You don’t want to order a room-service pad thai when the authentic taste of Phuket is right under your nose. Since you’re a nightcrawler, we know just the place to be. Mingle with the locals at Mai Morn, a restaurant-cum-karaoke bar at the heart of the city, grab a beer and try specialties like moo hong (pork belly stew), mee hoon (rice noodles) with crab curry, het khraeng mok jon (grilled mushroom in banana leaves) and nam phrik goong siab (crispy shrimp paste). Just sugar, spice and everything nice!

2. Kra Chok See Restaurant
For another low-key but tasty night in town, head to the quirky, Dutch brown café-inspired Thai food haven with an Andaman touch. Kra Chok See (“stained glass”) is Phuket’s most well-kept secret: beside a quiet, ordinary exterior (a Sino-Portuguese shophouse, ubiquitous in Phuket Town), the restaurant’s owner prefers customers’ word of mouth recommendations to getting publicised by established publications. And it’s a strategy that works, mind you. For years, the cozy restaurant has welcomed diners of all walks of life, including those who dance on the table when the music drops and those remain on their seat, coyly shaking a tambourine. Speaking of which, yes, that is a thing, and it happens after 9pm and usually a few mojitos.
Open: Tuesday-Saturday, 6.30pm-late
Find it: 26 Takua Pa Road, Amphoe Meuang, Phuket
3. Quip Sky Bar
Located on the rooftop of Quip Bed & Breakfast, Phuket’s first-ever “sky bar” is one not to be missed. From the moment you enter the vintage-meets-industrial interior of the bar’s mothership hotel, you know it’s going to be different from the rest of what its next-doors offer. And it is. The al fresco chill-out space is one of a kind. Instead of glowing aquamarine water, this breezy poolside deck-like bar looks over the stunning view of Old Town Phuket at night. So dive in as well as dig in some of the most affordable lobster menus. We recommend the lobster bruschetta, deep fried lobster wontons, lobster pad thai, and lobster tom yum ramen (#LobsterForDays) with your preferred choice of local beer or cocktail.

4. Rockin’ Angels Blues Café
What’s a good night out without music? But forget the EDM mixes that blast every corner of Patong, here at Rockin’ Angels, it’s all about proper good rhythm and blues. You’ll be greeted by the charming interior that echoes that of music bars in Deep South America — red bricks, dim lights, jazzed-up neon signs, vinyls in frames, a wide selection of alcoholic drinks, and most importantly, a resident live band who’ll get you jamming to classic rock from 9pm all through the night. Guests are encouraged to join in on an impromptu performance. So all of you aspiring rock stars out there, the stage is yours.
Open: Tuesday-Sunday, 5.30pm-1am
Find it: 55 Yaowarat Road, Talad Yai, Amphoe Meuang, Phuket
5. Music Matter
Want more variety of sounds? We’ve got just the place. Despite its discreet location, Music Matter has the reputation across the city as the hub of jazz. Be there on a Wednesday night for a jam session from aficionados and amateurs alike. With a cocktail (another thing the bar is renown for) in hand, relaxing tunes in the air, it’s enough for you to have one of those Midnight in Paris moments. Not that into jazz? Not to worry, every music genre matters to this homely bar: they provide loungers and music lovers everything from rock to radio pop, from swing to funk.

6. Full Moon Brewwork
You know where to dine like a local. You know where to go for live music. But if there’s anywhere you want to be for a relaxing night while downing Phuket’s best brews, it’s Full Moon Brewwork. While the microbrewery and restaurant is the only spot on the list located in the Patong area – not to mention in the middle of a touristy mall – it is a haven that shields diners from the rambling beachside neighbourhood. Grab a fusion dish like ramen cheese burger or Australian rib eye green curry and a beer — the list is filled with some of the most original craft beers in the region: the rare tropical fruit Inthanon ale, the Andaman dark ale crafted with locally sourced grains, international award-winning Chalawan pale ale, and many more.
